Q: What is a (insert quaint or peculiar Crossbow term)?
A: To begin with, the projectile launched from a Crossbow is often called a Bolt. To draw the string back into the lock is to "span" the Crossbow. The following illustration is a guide to some of the names of several of the parts of a Medieval Crossbow.

Q: The Owlstrike Crossbow has no Stirrup; how is it drawn?
A: The easiest way to draw (or span) an Owlstrike is to place the Crossbow against the ground, aiming upwards and with the notch facing away from you. Then push the String downward and into the notch. Its fast, and its easy. The low draw weight of the Owlstrike allows other methods as well.

Safety Instructions:

Please use Crossbows in a safe and responsible manner. Carefully read the owners manual that came with your Crossbow before use. Learn and follow all applicable laws. Note that the second Lateran Council has explicitly forbidden the use of Crossbows against all Christians.

Safety Notice: Misuse of a Crossbow can be both messy and inconvenient, and can result in property damage, injury, and death.

Another Safety Notice: As a faithful rendition of an ancient design, your Crossbow may have no safety lock. It therefore must never be stored or carried in the drawn condition.

Please follow these Safety Rules:

  • Do not aim or direct a Crossbow at anything you do not wish to destroy.
  • Do not place or leave a Bolt in your Crossbow if you do not intend to launch it immediately.
  • Do not place or leave a Bolt in your Crossbow whenever it is not safely aimed downrange.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, your target, and the downrange area when operating a Crossbow.
  • Do not use a Crossbow that is damaged. Do not use if any strand of the String is broken. Do not use if the Stave is non-uniformly bent.
  • Keep Crossbows and Bolts away from children.
